Livingston HealthCare’s Tobacco Use Prevention Program
Overcoming Tobacco Addition
As a healthcare organization, Livingston HealthCare recognizes that tobacco use is the number one cause of preventable disease and death in our society. Livingston HealthCare has taken an important step to address this major public health problem by creating a smoke-free and tobacco-free campus.
Abstaining During Your Stay
Our policy prohibits the use of all tobacco products everywhere on our property, both inside our buildings and in outdoor areas. This policy supports tobacco users who are trying to quit by eliminating triggers associated with smoking or chewing tobacco. It also prevents exposure to secondhand smoke and sends a clear message that the use of all forms of tobacco does not support health. We appreciate your cooperation as we strive to provide a safe and healthy environment for our patients, visitors, and employees.
During your hospitalization, it will not be possible for you to leave our facility to use tobacco. Our staff will make every effort to help you manage nicotine withdrawal and cravings for tobacco. Your healthcare team can discuss the various medication options that are available to help you feel relaxed and comfortable.
Tobacco Use and Surgery Preparation
If you are planning a surgical procedure, it is advisable to quit smoking beforehand. You will get the most benefit if you refrain from smoking for at least eight weeks before your surgery and don't resume smoking afterwards. However, if that is not possible, being smoke-free for even a few days or weeks before your surgery date can be beneficial. The longer you are smoke-free before and after your surgery, the better.
